Shopping Cart Ritual
I have a whole album dedicated to alleyways. This one from Washington, DC really stood out to me. The way each cart was separated from each other in a zigzag fashion. How all of them were facing to the right and how the setting sun projected a calmness onto the scene. It looked like the remnants of some concrete ritual. It showed me balance, symmetry and a lingering story never to be known. There could also be a more practical explanation. In Puerto Rico (where I’m from) you can occasionally see an obstacle course of shopping carts, trash cans and other hard to move objects scattered across streets where drive thru drug deals often take place. This is to keep a watchful eye on whoever comes in and slow down whoever’s rushing to get out.
